Content Credentials

Last updated 4 August 2026. What we put on every file we deliver, and when you may need to say something about it yourself.

What we mark

Every file we deliver carries two machine-readable layers. Neither is optional — there is no switch, and we do not remove them.

  1. IPTC XMP — the standard digitalSourceType=trainedAlgorithmicMedia tag. Any tool that reads IPTC provenance can see the file was produced with AI.
  2. C2PA Content Credentials — a self-signed Content Credentials manifest that records this product as the issuer and lists the OpenAI original as a provenance ingredient. That is the chain: model provider → us → you.

We mark because we are a downstream provider of an AI system. Under the EU AI Act, Article 50(2) requires providers to put machine-readable marks on synthetically generated or manipulated content, as far as that is technically feasible. These two layers are what we ship for that duty.

We do not claim a certificate-authority trust chain. The C2PA signature is self-signed. That is still a real provenance record; it is not a CA-backed attestation.

When you need to disclose

Our marks are the provider side. You may have a separate duty as the deployer — the party who puts the content in front of people.

If you take an export from this product and materially change it further — pose, scene, or placed elements — you may need to disclose that the content is AI-generated or AI-manipulated when you publish it. Two rules that can attach to that role:

  • EU AI Act Article 50(4) — deployer disclosure for deep-fake or substantially manipulated content aimed at natural persons. Machine-readable marks in the file do not, by themselves, finish this duty.
  • New York General Business Law §396-b — when AI is used in advertising, significant disclosure may be required.

That obligation sits with you if you deploy the content, not with us for shipping the reformat. We re-lay out your creative at other ad sizes; we do not publish to a platform on your behalf. Further edits you make after download are yours to account for.

A disclosure template

If you need language for an ad, campaign, or landing page, you can adapt this:

This image was created or modified with the assistance of artificial intelligence.

Keep it short, put it where a person can actually see it, and adjust the wording if your counsel prefers something more specific to your campaign.

Not legal advice

This page is not legal advice. It describes what we mark and flags duties that may fall on you as a deployer. For advice on your campaign, market, or jurisdiction, talk to your own counsel.
